English: Plaque installed in 1999 to commemerate the centenary of the move from East Perth to Karrakatta cemeteries.
Transcription: This plaque and cypress grove commemorate the historic link between the East Perth Cemeteries which closed in July 1899 and the Karrakatta Cemetery which opened for the first burial in April 1899.
The grove of seven cypress trees represents the seven separate denominational cemeteries which comprised the East Perth burial grounds in the nineteenth century. The two golden cypress trees represent the Karrakatta Cemetery which followed East Perth as the chief burial ground fort he Perth Metropolitan Region. This grove was planted on 16 October 1999 in the presence of His Excellency the Governor of Western Australia, Major Michael Jeffery AC MC and blessed by the Dean of Perth, the Very Reverend Dr John Shepherd, in the presence of representatives from the National Trust of Australia (WA), the Royal Western Australian Historical Society (Inc.) and the Metropolitan Cemeteries Board, as part of the centenary celebrations of the Karrakatta Cemetery. |
