I started using Flickr in about 2015 I think. I like it because it
- keeps the full-resolution original files;
- allows open licencing (Creative Commons);
- supports approximate dates; and
- the API is reasonable and so it’s easy to move files to other places.
That’s not to say that I still use it as my main photo site, but I do still recommend it to people (in preference to things like Instagram).
