The bridge stands on the site of an earlier structure built in 1906 which was officially closed in October 1984 and finally demolished in August 1987. The old bridge was classified by the National Trust for its unique architectural and technical accomplishment and the current structure reflects some design features of the old bridge whilst incorporating modern safety requirements.}}
