The last days of Rosies

So Rosie O’Grady’s, the fake Irish pub in Fremantle, is closing in two or three weeks. I know it’s ridiculous, but I like it there! I’ve had many beers, and generally enjoyed the almost-always-empty vibe. Sure it’s a manufactured, falsely-traditional interior design, but I don’t care. I’ll be sad to see it turn into another trendy place with $12 beers.

Planet Freo not offline

I thought I’d better phrase the title of this post in the negative, seeing as the blasted thing has been more often offline over the last couple of months than it has been online. Even when it’s been online it’s not been working properly. Hurrumph.

Anyway, perhaps now at last we’re on the road to correct operation. The main page and the RSS feed are now back up and working. I’ve switched to a new script (details of which to come soon).

Please let me know if Planet Freo is working okay now for you. Thanks!

CuppaShack (Winterfold Road cafe)

Just tried the new cafe that’s opened at the shops near the corner of Winterfold Road and Carrington Street. It’s far nicer than I was expecting! Not that a suburban shopping centre should be expected to produce boring cafes, it’s just that they rather often do. :-)

It was a nice place to sit outside, the tables are nothing unusual (the chairs weigh a ton), and they weren’t playing the radio but rather had chosen what music to inflict on people — with good results. And the coffee was terrific.

Updated: I got the name wrong earlier; it’s not got a space in it.

3 sites gone from Planet Freo

Three feeds are gone from Planet Freo. Only two of the sites are kaput though; the SFFC still has a site, but they’ve ditched the feed (not on purpose, I’d say, because they’ve still got an icon for it on their homepage).

  1. South Fremantle Football Club
  2. FreOasis
  3. Fremantle Carnevale

Planet Freo back online

Sorry to everyone who noticed; Planet Freo‘s been offline for 48 hours. I thought I needed access to my home machine to fix it; turns out I didn’t, but anyway I waited till I was home (and powered by a dram of Ardmore) to fix it. It is now fixed.

I’ve updated the FreoWiki page that lists the feeds (if anyone’s keeping track of who’s been censured).

Anyone know of other blogs that should be on the list? Let me know!

FHS dinner; and the Queen

Photo of the Queen's portrait.A terrific dinner last night at Villa Roma for the Fremantle History Society. Larry Foley spoke about his life growing up in Fremantle and working in the wool trade here and all over WA. The food was great, and it was nice to meet some new people and enjoy the general vibe of the Society.

Before the dinner, I popped in to the Workers’ Club garage sale. It was over, but Don was good enough to share a beer with me and indulge my wish to explore the cellar — which is where the portrait at left came from. It’s now got pride of place in my pile-of-things-to-be-hung-on-the-wall. Maybe.

These old clubs all used to have portraits of the Queen, it seems. The North Freo Bowls club’s is still hanging. Some Scout halls keep theirs on the wall too. Allegiance to Empire and all that bollocks, I guess; I’m not keeping this in adherance that same spirit, but just because it’s odd to remember that people used to think this sort of thing was important.
