- Don't think of photos as all of a set; they're no more a set than are all text files and it doesn't make sense for all of those to be kept together.
- Upload everything possible to Commons, and download a backup of all of those.
- Have yearly manually-curated printable photo albums of the best ones.
- Use Flickr for sharing with family and friends, and public photos that don't belong on Commons (e.g. some types of event photos).
- Set up DigiKam to index the Commons and Flickr backups (i.e. it has three collections: the local working directory, and those two).
- The manual photo albums don't need to be indexed because they'll be contained in the others or come from completely different places, like other people (via annoying things like WhatsApp, but it's hard to fight that any more).
(The date of this post might not be correct, but it's within about a month of being so I think.)
