The lesson we should learn, but won't, is to not allow companies to enclose and control such spaces. But we keep doing that, again and again. It's a pity.
It's remarkable how much we come to rely on private companies' largesse in these matters. Free hosting, free services, free everything… until it isn't, or it's hobbled in very specific and carefully thought-out ways that will not quite make you annoyed enough to leave. It's really annoying, because the alternative is a community-centric approach that is messier and in some ways "less professional" and which is built around humans talking to humans and figuring things out. I know what I'd rather have more of in my life.
