There's a new extension released just today: Extension:AuthRemoteUser (by Tobias Oetterer). It's always nice to see what people are working on and releasing, but even more interestingly this one is also available under the mediawiki namespace on Packagist — I didn't think anyone was allowed to add new packages there these days.
